Li Shufu, founder and chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, owns about 9.69 percent of German auto manufacturing giant Daimler and currently has a market capitalization of nearly $9 billion.
This shareholding means that Li Shufu is the largest shareholder in Daimler, which owns car brands such as Mercedes-Benz. Bloomberg reported that a Daimler spokesman said that the acquisition of shares is Li Shufu's personal investment.
In this regard, a Daimler Group spokesperson said in an interview: "This acquisition of shares is Li Shufu's personal investment, and I am very happy to welcome another long-term investor". It is understood that Geely has been buying Daimler shares in the stock market so that its shareholding ratio is only slightly less than 10%. Reuters quoted people familiar with Li's thinking as saying that his strategic goal is to form an industry alliance with Daimler. He believes that in the new competitive situation, only one or two or three of the existing manufacturers may survive, and manufacturers should unite and invest in the future.
The Wall Street Journal said Daimler did not disclose whether Li Shufu would join the board of directors, but said it welcomed the investment as a vote of confidence in the company's future and looked forward to discussing it with him.
Li Shufu already owns Volvo Cars, Polestar Cars, Lynk & Co., Geely Cars, London Electric Cars, Long-range Commercial Vehicles and other brands. Geely Holdings has also made strategic investments in Proton Motors, Lotus Motors and Taili Flying Cars.
In January this year, Geely announced that last year's car sales exceeded 1.24 million, a year-on-year increase of 63%. This year's sales target is 1.58 million.
